COLOMBO – The Colombo Grand Mosque had announced the Islamic New Year, the first day of (Muharram) of the Islamic Month (Hijri 1444) on Sunday July 31 as the new moon of Muharram was not sighted Friday evening.
The decision to observe the first day of the new year was taken at a meeting held in the presence of the officials from the All Ceylon Jammiyyathul Ulema (the Supreme Council of Muslim Theologians of Sri Lanka). Officials of the Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Department. Trustees of Colombo Grand Mosque, and Imams and Trustees of the mosques at the Colombo Grand Mosque.
The department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs headed by Ibrahim Sahib Ansar is hosting a get-together at the Masjid Alfar,Red Mosque, at the Second Cross Street in Pettah at 10 am on Sunday, July 31. The invitation is open to all Muslims to celebrate the new year with exchange of greetings and good wishes among the brethren.
