COLOMBO : Iran’s Ambassador in Colombo, Dr.Alireza Delkhosh, criticized the United States and three European nations yesterday for their efforts to implement the snapback mechanism, arguing that the division within the UN Security Council regarding this matter underscores a lack of legality and legitimacy.
He pointed out that six out of the 15 UNSC members did not endorse the re-imposition of previously terminated resolutions. Ambassador Delkhosh added that any efforts by European nations or the United States to reinstate these terminated sanctions are null and void. “International law is a toy at the hands of United States”, he said.
During an interaction with a group of journalists at the Iran Embassy in Colombo, the ambassador further stated that the snapback procedure invoked by France, Britain, Germany and the United States is “null and void,” adding that the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 and the failure of the European countries to fulfill their commitments under the agreement.
Russia and China do not acknowledge the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions against Iran. The United Nations reinstated an arms embargo and additional sanctions on Iran concerning its nuclear program, following a process known as snapback initiated by European powers.
