Sri Lankan women’s squad that is in action in the United Arab Emirates under the ICC women’s World Cup Qualifier-2024 to secure a place for the Final Round of ICC Women’s World Cup to be staged in Bangladesh in September. Yesterday, (27.04.2024) the second matchday of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024 witnessed the Netherlands, Uganda and Zimbabwe record important first wins while Sri Lanka made it two wins in two. Sri Lanka, who are placed in Group A are expected to dominate their group and they have got two more matches that are against Uganda and the United States of America. Sri Lanka comfortably won their first match by 67 runs that was against Thailand played at Tolerance Oval Stadium in Abu Dhabi on 25th April 2025.
Expectantly, on Saturday Sri Lanka won their second match with an impressive performance where the Lankan Captain Chamari Athathpaththu who has been the attraction of the international fans and audience for her superb batting feat of scoring an unbeaten 195 against high riding South Africa the other day scored a brilliant 59 not out paving the way for Sri Lanka to register their 2nd win. It won this match by 10 wickets off 10 overs. Chamri’s partner, the other opener, Vishmi Gunaratna chipped in with 24 not out. Earlier, Scotland who were invited to bat ended their innings scoring only 94 runs in 18.1 overs. Kavisha Dilhari and Inoshi Priyadharshani were the pick of the bowlers claiming 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
In Group B where Netherland, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Vanuatu (it is located in the South Western Pacific Ocean) and United Arab Emirates fight for supremacy to get a spot in the Final Round of the World Cup, the first four nations have got two points each with the Host UAE still struggling to get any points. There are 20 matches in this tourney and by yesterday 8 matches were completed. There will be 4 matches to be played on the third match day that is 29th Monday April 2024. It is a rest day for Lankan lasses who are placed atop collecting 4 points in Group A and their next match is scheduled to be worked off on May 1st that will be against Uganda who are placed second along with Scotland with 2 points each in this group.
