COLOMBO:The low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal by today, the meteorology department said.
The system is expected to further develop and move closer to the east coast of the country. Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the country due to the influence of this system.
Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places in Eastern province.
Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central, Central and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Central and Uva provinces and in Hambantota district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere in the country during the evening or night.Fairly strong winds of about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces and in Hambantota district.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the deep and shallow sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Pottuvil will be very rough to high as the wind speed can be increased up to (60-70) kmph at times. Very heavy showers or thundershowers are likely in these areas. Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Pottuvil until further notice.
Also officials said considering the current low-pressure situation in the Bay of Bengal and its possible further developments within next few days, there is a possibility of occurring flood situations in some of lowline flood prone areas in river basins such as Malwathu oya, Kala-Oya, Kanagarayanaru, Parangi Aru, Maa-Oya, Yan-Oya, Mahaweli Ganga, Maduru Oya, Mundeniaru, Gal Oya, Heda-Oya and Vila-Oya.
Therefore, residents and travelers in those areas are requested to be vigilant in this regards, until November 28. Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take adequate precautions in this regards.
