KINNIYA – As the Meteorological Department informed that the depression area in the south-east Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a deep depression lay and centered 530 km southeast to Trincomalee, the Disaster Management Team in Kinniya has made arrangements to shift the residents in the danger zone to safer areas on Wednesday evening.
The weather forecast of the government said it is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. Further, it says that the system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around Wednesday (December 02) evening/night.
The Disaster Management Committee in Kinniya had coordinated the 32 Grama Sevaka divisions to take precautionary measures for the residents who are living in the coastal areas. The authorities have transferred some residents in the danger zone to the nearest school, Al-Adhan Maha Vidyalaya.
Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Retd. Major General Kamal Gunaratne had alerted concerned areas for the Divisional Secretariats to take preventive measures for residents in the danger zone. He also urged the tri-forces to be ready in case of an emergency and render their assistance in times of an emergency.
