COLOMBO : National Unity Alliance has strongly condemneed the government’s decision to deport 103 Rohingya refugees, including over 40 children, who were recently rescued off the Mullaitivu coast. This decision places vulnerable individuals at grave risk and violates international obligations, including the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits returning individuals to a country where they face threats of persecution, torture, or death.
The Rohingya refugees, who have fled unimaginable violence and persecution in Myanmar, sought safety on our shores. Deporting them back to a country where their lives are in danger is a severe breach of human rights and international norms. This decision also tarnishes Sri Lanka’s reputation as a nation that values compassion, humanity, and the protection of the most vulnerable.
” We call on the government to immediately reconsider its decision and halt any plans for deportation. Instead, we urge the authorities to work with international organizations and humanitarian agencies to ensure the safety and dignity of these refugees while facilitating their resettlement in a secure country.
This is a critical opportunity for Sri Lanka to demonstrate its commitment to upholding human rights and international law. By protecting these refugees, Sri Lanka can reinforce its legacy of compassion, tolerance, and solidarity with those in need.’
“We urge all citizens, civil society organizations, and international partners to join in advocating for the humane treatment of these individuals and to ensure that Sri Lanka remains a nation that stands firmly on the side of justice and humanity,” said M Azath S. Salley ,Leader – National Unity Alliance and Former Governor Western Province.
