KANDY : Gampola, a densely populated area in the heart of Kandy, was made the capital of the island by King Buwanekabahu IV, who ruled for four years in the mid-fourteenth century. The last king of Gampola was King Buwanekabahu V, who ruled the island for 29 years.
Mahajana Group, an essential service provider who hails from the ancient Kingdom of Gampola calls home for Mahajana Super, Mahajana Real Estate and Mahajana Oil, now takes the initiative of transitioning its principle business to terms with the modern world.
A wholesale supermarket which sells bundles and cases of all essentials in a display range just like in any supermarket but customers can now benefit from bulk buying, where prices of all items are discounted according to the quantity the customer’s purchase.
Unlike in any other traditional wholesale enterprise, at Mahajana Hypermart the freedom of choice is left with the customer. This is the first of its kind in the country.
The Management of Mahajana Group wants to change the wholesale industry by minimizing communication between the customer and providing easy access to product information and prices, just like a supermarket setup but customers can choose to buy cases and bundles which cannot be usually done at a traditional supermarket.
Such concepts are common overseas, but the shift hasn’t still taken place in Sri Lanka yet, Mahajana Group believes this project will enable wholesalers around the country to transform the business into a technology driven platform as the blueprint will be first hand tested by Mahajana Group by means of Mahajana Hypermart.
Mahajana Group has partnered with many other businesses at the location, where Pharmacy, Bakery, Restaurants, Hair Salons, Meat Stalls, Vegetables and fruits stalls are all positioned at the location calling for an all in one wholesale shopping experience in the city.
Mahajana Group understands bringing change amongst customers is not easy, but believes someone should take up the challenge and bring in change.
“A large scale investment at a time like this is not easy, essentials items are scarce, imports are restricted, prices are fluctuating every day and this is the most challenging era we have come across being in the industry for more than 35 years, but this is the time we want to do this, this is the time we want to show how resilient we are and what is possible and be an example to the rest of the business who wants to change but not knowing when to do so. Sustainability is important, so is bringing in change” Nazaaf Nazar the Executive Director of Mahajana Group. told Colombo Times on Thursday.
