COLOMBO President Anura Kumara Dissanayake deserves commendation for refusing to accede to the Maha Sangha’s request that Buddhist monks serving prison sentences should not be required to disrobe, in connection with Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.
By standing firm, the President has demonstrated that the rule of law must prevail over religious influence, political pressure or personal considerations. His stance respects the authority of the Commissioner-General of Prisons and reinforces the fundamental principle that no individual should be above the law.
While respecting the religious dignity of the Maha Sangha, compliance with prison regulations cannot be selectively waived. Such impartiality is essential to public confidence in our institutions and the preservation of equality before the law.
It is hoped that the President will continue to uphold these principles and, where necessary, initiate appropriate legal reforms following consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The rule of law must always remain paramount, regardless of an individual’s status, religious standing or influence.
