COLOMBO ,The official FIFA World Cup Fan Zone 2026 was inaugurated on Thursday, June 11 at York Street, in front of the Grand Oriental Hotel in Colombo, under the patronage of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath.
Addressing the opening ceremony, the Minister revealed that the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has agreed to provide support for the construction of an international-standard football stadium in Sri Lanka. The proposed facility is expected to be built at the Kadolkale grounds in Negombo, and preliminary legal procedures have already commenced.
The Minister emphasized that developing football alongside cricket would help unlock Sri Lanka’s untapped sports tourism potential. He noted that despite global challenges, Sri Lanka continues to attract visitors due to its hospitality and rich heritage, with tourist arrivals surpassing one million by the end of May 2026.
He also highlighted the historical significance of the Grand Oriental Hotel, stating that the government has already approved plans to modernize the landmark property while preserving its heritage value.
Inviting football fans to visit the Fan Zone, Minister Herath said the initiative would provide an opportunity to enjoy live World Cup action while experiencing one of Colombo’s most historic locations.
