COLOMBO : Environment Minister Naseer Ahmed was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka-Saudi Parliamentary Friendship Association on Wednesday, May 10.
Ahamed who was unanimously elected as president of the association was proposed by state ministers Cader Masthan and Aravinda Kumar.
His selection for this post is believed to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
A graduate of Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd University of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ahamed has close ties with the Kingdom. It is also noteworthy that many of the leaders of Saudi Arabia’s leading fuel companies are friends of the minister since they studied at the same university.
Minister Ahamed maintains close cooperation with Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia for Sri Lanka’s economic development. It has given him the opportunity to share his experiences on business strategies for international marketing of domestic mineral resources and maturity in facing climate challenges.
Saudi Ambassador Khalid Hamoud Nasser Aldasam Alkahtani and Speaker of the house Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena also spoke during the inaugural meeting
Deputy Chief of Mission of the Saudi embassy Abdulelah Orkobi was also present at the meeting.
