

COLOMBO : On an intervention made by former governor Azath Sally, 25,000 detained copies of the holy Quran donated by Makkah based Sadiq Hajiar was cleared from the Customs on a payment of Rs 1.8 million demurrage this week.
Sadiq Hajiar, a Sri Lankan born Philanthropist now based in the holy city of Makkah,had sent the consignment to the Muslim Affairs department for distribution among the deserving Muslims and to various mosques in the island.
The consignment comprises 25,000 copies of the the Holy Quran and 15,000 copies of the Tamil translation of the holy book.
On Friday, Sept. 14,director of the department of Muslim Cultural Affairs,M S M .Nawaz donated some of the copies from the consignment to the Colombo Grand Mosque.
Grand Mosque Trustee Zuhairul Azmi received the copies of the Holy Quran in the presence of Assistant Director M Nilufer and it’s official Mufthi Mursi at department .
The remaining 15,000 copies of the translated copies of the holy quran are yet to be cleared from the Customs.
