COLOMBO: Direction Sri Lanka, a collective of Independent Professionals of this Country has called upon the Government and the Opposition, Members of Cabinet, Leaders of Political Parties represented in Parliament and all Members of Parliament to take all necessary steps and measures that would be required to rescind the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and to reintroduce the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with necessary amendments addressing the democratic way of governance.
In its message, the group has said: ““Need of the hour for everyone to come together in the national interest”, Direction Sri Lanka a collective of Independent Professionals of this Country continues to be deeply concerned on the unfolding political, social and economic situation in the Country.
“As a priority during the period of the Caretaker / Interim National Government, action should be taken to rescind the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and to reintroduce the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with necessary amendments addressing the democratic way of governance”
“ One of the said six action points which is for the Prime Minister to resign has now been satisfied, and another action point which is the formation of a Caretaker / Interim National Government comprising of a new Prime Minister and a Cabinet limited to 18 essential portfolios along with an equal number of Deputy Ministers, representing all political parties is presently work in progress and we are following closely to assess whether this action point would be satisfied in its full complement.
Direction Sri Lanka at its Founders Meeting held on 18th May 2022, having considered the developments up to date, decided that the present time is the most appropriate and suitable for the passing of the It is public knowledge that most of the aforesaid political leadership including the President, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have already committed to supporting the passing of this 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
In view of the loss of public confidence in the way Parliament has functioned in the recent past, Direction Sri Lanka is compelled to call upon the aforesaid political leadership to pass the 21st Amendment to the Constitution within a maximum period of one month from to-date.
Direction Sri Lanka would also shortly share with the aforesaid stakeholders and the public its proposals for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution incorporating the positive features of all drafts presently formulated placing primacy to the democratic way of governance.
Direction Sri Lanka is further compelled to place on record that if at any point during this period, there are indications that any one or more of the above mentioned political leadership are not genuinely pursing the due promulgation of this Amendment, then in that event, Direction Sri Lanka would be compelled to take all such lawful steps and measures that would be necessary including peaceful protest and trade and professional action, to compel the representatives of the people to follow through with the promulgation of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.”
