Meanwhile, the Corporation has made arrangements to distribute 10 million already-imported quality-assured eggs to Sathosa outlets on Monday (Dec.18).
The corporation’s chairman Asiri Walisundara said the egg consignment scheduled for tomorrow would be released to the local market after sending the products for testing.
On Friday (Dec.15), Trade Minister Nalin Fernando revealed that permission was granted to the State Trading Corporation to import eggs until the end of April 2024. During this period, 30 million eggs are planned to be brought into the country each month.
The decision was taken in a bid to control the unreasonable increase in the price of eggs in the local market.
The Trade Minister also reiterated that the government would continue to import eggs if local egg producers fail to bring down the exorbitant prices.
Earlier this week, egg producers said that eggs cannot be sold below Rs. 55 each until the end of Christmas
