COLOMBO : “On February 21, 2025, Akio ISOMATA, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, presented “The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” to Mr. Chitral Jayawardane, Former President of JICA Alumni Association and Former President of Sasakawa Trust, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to promoting friendly relations and mutual understanding between Japan and Sri Lanka. The ceremony took place at the Embassy Hall, where Mr. Jayawardane was warmly congratulated by many of his family members and loved ones in attendance.
Ambassador ISOMATA praised. Jayawardane for his tireless efforts as a founding member and former president of the JICA Alumni Association, playing a key role in building a strong network among JICA returnees and promoting Japan’s contributions in Sri Lanka. Through his leadership, the association has not only strengthened ties among its members but also broadened its activities, organising events such as Sri Lanka-Japan Night. These initiatives have enhanced cultural exchange, deepened public understanding of Japan, and fostered stronger connections between JICA alumni and the Japanese community in Sri Lanka.
Ambassador ISOMATA also emphasised that Jayawardane was deeply committed to social welfare, spearheading initiatives to support disadvantaged communities. His efforts in organising health camps, blood donation drives, and scholarship programmes have significantly improved the lives of many. Notably, the blood donation campaigns at the National Blood Bank, originally established with Japanese yen loans, have exemplified his dedication to public service. His collaboration with the Lions Club has further amplified these efforts, earning national recognition, including multiple awards from the Ministry of Health on World Blood Donor Day.
“The Order of the Rising Sun” is awarded by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan to foreign nationals who have made distinguished contributions to enhancing friendly relations with Japan.
It is hoped that this auspicious event would further develop the bilateral relationship between Japan and Sri Lanka.
