COLOMBO : Animal Production and Health Department’s Director General Dr. Hemali Kotalawala stated that cattle do not die due to Lumpy Skin Disease, which is spreading in several parts of the North-Western Province these days.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera asked the Director General about this, and she said that there is little chance of cattle dying due to this disease at a meeting held at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute Tuesday May (30).
The cattle lumpy skin disease was previously reported from the North Eastern Provinces, and its spread was successfully controlled. But ignoring the instructions given by the Animal Production and Health Department not to transport these cattle, some people have transported cattle from areas where the disease has spread to other areas.
However, after contracting this disease, the cattle become immune to it, so there is no possibility of contracting the disease again. Also, eating the meat of beef such as cattle does not spread the disease to others, and this disease especially causes to reduce milk production.
Apart from that, there is no spread by touching lumpy skin diseased cattle, and the Director General emphasized that there should be no unnecessary fear regarding this disease.
