COLOMBO :The Australian Government will provide AUD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to support Sri Lanka’s response to Cyclone Ditwah.
High Commissioner Matthew Duckworth:said : ” Australia stands with Sri Lanka at this difficult time. Australia will support the urgent delivery of essential services to communities in need. It will work with humanitarian partners and the United Nations to deliver on the ground assistance, and we are supporting NGO partners to rapidly respond.”
In addition to this AUD 1 million contribution, the envoy said Australia is liaising with its local civil society partners to redirect existing funds towards meeting urgent needs in affected areas across the country. Our funding will prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable including women, girls and people with disability.
Australia welcomes the activation of regional response funds. This includes the Regional Prepositioning Initiative, managed by UNFPA and Australia, which will support immediate sexual and reproductive health and protection needs of women and girls affected by the crisis, Duckworth:said.
Communities in all of Sri Lanka’s Districts have been impacted by flooding, landslides and damage to homes and infrastructure.
Approximately 1 million Sri Lankans have been affected by the cyclone. This number is expected to rise as the government and partners continue to assess needs.
