COLOMBO – Arjuna Ranatunga, newly appointed Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee Chairman, expressed his vision to transform cricket into a closely-knit entity rather than just a team during his recent appointment on Monday.
Emphasizing the need for unity, Ranatunga highlighted the importance of building a cohesive team that involves coaches, players, and the Cricket Board responsible for the nation’s citizens.
Calling upon former Sri Lankan cricketers to join forces, Ranatunga aimed to reinvigorate the sport with a deeply committed team focused on the country’s success. “I aim to instill discipline and nurture players capable of reaching the highest level. It’s not about individuals; it’s about creating a strong team,” said Ranatunga, who is soon to celebrate his 60th birthday.
Addressing administrative challenges, Ranatunga stressed the need to tackle concerns while keeping the fans satisfied. He acknowledged the fans’ disappointment and expressed a strong commitment to steer cricket into a new era.
On the issue of corruption, Ranatunga aligned with the President’s ‘zero tolerance to corruption’ vision, emphasizing a cleaner system within Sri Lanka Cricket.
During the ongoing Sri Lanka ICC World Cup series, Ranatunga focused on the goal of qualifying for the next year’s Champions’ Trophy, dismissing concerns of a potential ICC suspension. He cited South Africa’s interim committee as an example to allay these fears.
Expressing optimism, Ranatunga highlighted that previous interim committees were operational during the best-run periods in the country’s cricket administration. He aimed to strengthen cricket at school and club levels.
Ranatunga will primarily oversee the cricket aspect while collaborating with the committee experts for effective administration. The shift in the administrative leadership of the cricket board was indicated by the returned vehicles and office keys by the suspended SLC Board Members led by President Shammi Silva.
