AS SHEIKH NOORAMITH
COLOMBO ; “The national multi-sectoral campaign “A Nation United”, aimed at eradicating the grave menace of dangerous drugs – one of Sri Lanka’s most pressing social, health, moral and national security challenges – was officially launched on 30th October 2025 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, under the patronage of H.E. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
A National Steering Council, chaired by the President himself, has already been established to lead this national movement. I am honored to serve as a member of this Steering Committee, representing the Islamic scholarly community.
The “A Nation United” National Steering Council consists of 23 key institutions and organizations, representing diverse sectors and segments of society, all working together to drive this ambitious and urgent national initiative.
For effective nationwide implementation, a structured and coordinated multi-tier system has been introduced – consisting of District Steering Committees, Regional Steering Committees, and Public Safety Committees at the grassroots level across the island with broad participation, partnership, and ownership of the public and civil society.
As a National Steering Council member, and also as an Islamic religious scholar, I am fully committed to contributing actively and responsibly towards this national duty. The drug menace is not merely a criminal or legal issue – it is destroying the moral fabric of our society, breaking families, harming the physical and mental health of our youth, and threatening the future generations of this country. Islam stands firmly against all forms of intoxicants and destructive substances. Therefore, fighting this menace is both a national responsibility and a religious obligation.
Furthermore, prevention is key. Along with enforcement, we must create a healthy and continuous dialogue with our youth – they are our greatest trust and the leaders of tomorrow. We must guide them, mentor them, listen to them, and keep them positively engaged. Encouraging sports, healthy hobbies, social responsibility, and community involvement are essential to protect them from harmful influences and to prepare them to take up responsibility in building a stronger future for our nation.( The writer is the general secretary of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama ,ACJU)
