COLOMBO ; National Unity Alliance Leader and former governor Azath Salley has requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to hold an investigation into the recent fire at the Hafsa Ladies College,Weligama.
In a letter addressed to the president,Saller said : “ I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of grave concern regarding the recent fires at Hafsa Ladies College in Weligama.
The first fire occurred on Sunday, March 3rd, at approximately 4:30 pm. Initially, the police attributed the cause to an electric short circuit, but later changed their stance, citing heat as the reason. However, to date, no official report has been provided to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The second fire, which took place on April 29th, adds to the urgency of the situation. Given that it was a rainy day and there was no electricity, it is implausible that the fire could have been caused by either heat or electrical issues. Moreover, the fire occurred on the second floor in the same location as the previous incident, raising further suspicions.
Additionally, eyewitnesses have reported the presence of drones near the scene of the fires. Despite evidence and proof, the police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have dismissed these
reports, attributing the drones to German tourists. This dismissal raises serious questions about the thoroughness and impartiality of the investigation.
The magnitude of these incidents cannot be overstated, as they not only jeopardize the safety and security of the school and its students but also raise concerns about the broader implications for the community. The presence of thousands of people from the entire village, who gathered to extinguish the fire before the arrival of the fire brigade, underscores the gravity of the situation.
Furthermore, I witnessed condolence banners for Honorable Palitha Thewarapperuma adorned with
Israeli flags and three-wheelers bearing the Israeli flag. Such displays raise serious questions about foreign influence and sovereignty within our borders. Additionally, there are reports of celebrations among residents of Israeli houses surrounding the school that was affected by the fire, further adding to suspicion.”
