COLOMBO : Buddhist and Christian members of the clergy have vehemently opposed the appointment of United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero who serves as a Chief Sanghanayake in the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect and the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith have objected to the proposal of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa .
“This appointment is not the solution the people want at the moment,” the two religious leaders told the media.
Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero said Ranil Wickremesinghe was not suitable to fill the post of Prime Minister that was left vacant by Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He further said the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister is pure disregard of the request made by the Mahanayake Theros to appoint an all-party interim government.
Meanwhile, the Archbishop said the Mahanayake Theros had requested for an unbiased and independent person to be appointed as the new Prime Minister of the country.
He further said that they rejected the choice of Prime Minister by the President and the parliamentarians who are supporting this move.
His Eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said the proposed move will only further aggravate the country’s tense situation.
