COLOMBO: United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who does not have a single member of his party in the parliament, is tipped to be the leading contender to the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka which fell vacant following the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa .
The UNP sources confirmed the news and said that Ranil Wickremesinghe is to be sworn in as the Prime Minister this Thursday evening.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has reportedly extended its support to Ranil Wickremesinghe so he could command a majority in parliament.
Opposition parties have refused to take up the post of Prime Minister under the presidency of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, calling on the latter to resign over the current political and economic turmoil in Sri Lanka.
