COLOMBO: “ I am doing the nightwatchman’s job as the Finance Minister. I am not an expert in this field, If there is anyone who is more suited for this role in the opposition- come and take this post.” Finance Minister Ali Sabry told parliament with a great sense of sincerity on Wednesday, April 4
Sabry said here in parliament in Sri Lanka’s foreign liquidity reserves, which were at USD 7 billion by the end of 2019, have dropped to a critically low level below USD 50 million.
He made these remarks delivering a special statement in parliament on Wednesday (May 05). According to the lawmaker, the government’s tax revenues have decreased to 8.7% at present.
A Colombo Times reader had this to say ”Very rare qualities of lawyer turned politician have attracted the world and all Sri Lankans because of his candidness, straight-forwardness and sincerity .
Today the Hon. Finance Minister outlined the current economic condition of our country, although he is not an economist. His explanation of the current situation is highly commendable as no matter how difficult the times are the people of this country gets the clear understanding and awareness
Unlike his predecessors at the finance ministry and central bank who used to take the masses on a fairytale rough and blind ride,Sabry told the parliament the real economic situation and the plight of the country under these circumstances.
Now, the masses are aware of whats in it for every one of this nation and will be ever willing to tighten their belts and rally around our honest leaders and officials to make Sri Lanka rise up with true growth and regain our losses and march forward as a legitimate proud nation that would NEVER EVER default another country.”
In his speech, Sabry recalled that Sri Lanka should have sought the assistance of the International Monetary Fund much earlier, the finance minister said it would take at least a total of six months for Sri Lanka to enter a program with the IMF.
As the Budget 2022 is no longer realistic, Minister Sabry said the government hopes to present a new budget proposal in the parliament soon, through which the income taxes are expected to be increased, he added.
