COLOMBO : The National Identity Card is ready to be digitized by the first quarter of next year and the people will receive a NIC card with the highest technology in the world by next year, said the Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Development Coordination and Supervision and Digital Technology and Enterprise Development Namal Rajapaksa.
The Minister was speaking during the launch of the nationwide rollout campaign of ‘LANKAQR’-an integrated payment system developed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Expressing his views at the inaugural ceremony of the launch of the LANKAQR service throughout the country yesterday the minister said that every country in the world is modernizing and is following new methods of transaction. “As a country, the time has come for Sri Lanka too to keep up with this modernization in dealing with the world.”
LANKAQR is a project initiative from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to ensure all QR codes and QR based transactions in Sri Lanka are standardized and interoperable. “One can guess that many people in this country are immersed in technology. But how practical is their daily life with the technology that is integrated.
Care should be taken as to whether it is used effectively. The President was also briefed and a Cabinet paper was presented to appoint a committee to formulate a policy framework on how to move towards in line with modern transaction systems in the world through digitization. It was suggested that this should be made public first.
