COLOMBO: A senior official of the Sri Lankan government said here on Friday,August 20, that President would consider the request of the Mahanayakes of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters to impose a lockdown to prevent the spread of the Covid virus.
The President has responded positively to the request made by the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros with regard to a lockdown, State Minister Professor Channa Jayasumana said on Friday.
He said an official statement with regard to a lockdown will be made soon.
He made these comments following a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Friday.
On Thursday, the Mahanayaka Theros of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters called upon President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to lock down the country for a week to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In a joint letter to the President, the most venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero,Mahanayake of Malwatte Chapter and the most venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, Mahanayake of the Asgiriya highlighted the urgency of imposing a weeklong lockdown to have a control over the fast spread of the pandemic.
Mahanayaka Theros have pointed out that the spread of COVID-19 has brought upon a disaster situation with mutations of the virus also spreading across the country.
