Chitral is the capital of the Chitral District, situated on the western bank of the Chitral (Kunar) River, at the foot of Trich Mir (7,708 m), the highest peak of the Hindu Kush Range. The total area of the district is 14,504 sq. meters and average altitude of the valley is around 1,100 m.
This 322 km long mountain hideout, nestling high in the Hindu Kush range, is a place of scenic beauty and grandeur. Chitral’s collection of rugged mountains, hot-water springs, rivers teeming with trout, orchard-dotted slopes, friendly people and annual festivals are enchanting beyond description. For the modern day traveler this scenic region offers an exciting experience. It is easily accessible through a daily flight from Peshawar as well as from Islamabad.
From ancient times, Chitral hotels an important point on the trade routes from ancient Bactria (northern Afghanistan) and the Tarim Basin (China) to the plains of Gandhara (in northern Pakistan). Chitral was a Buddhist country before the extension of Islam, and the traces of Buddhism are still found. Alexander of Greece marched through this valley in 327 B.C, and left behind traces of Greek heritage, which can still be seen.
Mountaineering, Trekking & Hiking
The majestic Hindu Kush reigns supreme over the valley. The highest peak is the famous Trichmir, which soars 7700 meters high, and is a challenge to mountaineers. There are a number of other exciting peaks too-Isltornal, Banizom, Saraghar, Naushaq, Ghocharsor, Phal, Daspar and Don rising from 6096 meters to 7315 meters. Trekking and hiking are visitor’s favourite pastime. You can take your pick-You can either go by Jeep or Walk.
