COLOMBO- Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera on Saturday said the people have to obey the laws of the land and restrictions had been stipulated by the Health Ministry to contain the spread of COVID-19 “We have to obey the laws of the land in the larger interests of the people and these restrictions have been stipulated by the health authorities to curtail the increasing number of COVID cases in the country,” Weerasekera said.
He said it is the duty of the people not to embarrass policemen by violating health guidelines which would prompt police action in the implementation of the laws.
The Minister urged people not to blame the police for implementing quarantine regulations laid out by the Health Miinistry.
He was addressing the fishing folks after distributing dry rations among the affected fishermen in the Dehiwala Muncipal Council area.
The Minister said that women are not safe in society and they are subject to various forms of harassment in workplaces and even on the roads.
“I will ensure full freedom for women, give them their rightful place and try to wipe out women and child abuse, drugs, the underworld and the gangsters who forcefully collect ransom from traders,” he stressed, requesting the members of the public to lend their cooperation to implement his ideas. Minister Weerasekera distributed dry rations among affected fishermen living within Dehiwela-Mt.Lavinia municipal limits.The event was sponsored by Shiyam Rizwan and Isuru Wijewardena in coordination with the area municipal councillor Sharina Mustafa.
Mustafa said the dry packs were arranged by area philanthropists under the guidance of Rizwan and Wijewardena. Under the programme, around 125 families were benefited on Saturday.
The fishermen lost their living for more than two weeks because of the recent fire caused in the X-Press Pearl vessel which was sunk in Sri Lankan waters.Daily News
