COLOMBO– Former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the leader of the United National Party (UNP) was sworn in as a new Member of Parliament before the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this morning.
Wickremesinghe had been requested by a number of parties to be nominated for the National List seat to fill the gap left by the absence of a strong opposition in Parliament.
He has been a Member of Parliament from 1977 to 2019 and has served as Prime Minister five times. He is an experienced politician who has held a number of powerful ministerial posts.
His United National party, suffered a severe defeat at the last general elections which could not return a single member to the legislature. Wickremesinghe himself lost his seat at the polls.
He was entering the parliament on Wednesday through the bonus seat which his party obtained based on the total votes polled at the last elections.(Pix courtesy Daily News)
