NEGOMBO : The fishermen community in Negombo, staged a mass demonstration on Sunday morning June 20 to protest against the recent fuel price hike in Sri Lanka,
The protest led by Gamini Fernando , Negombo Municipal Council JVP member, who is also an executive committee member of the All-Ceylon Fisheries Association,was held at the Kotelawala bridge in Munnakara in Negombo city.
The fisherman complained that their community is largely affected by the fuel price hike since they use petrol and kerosene for their fishing boats and trawlers. They also said the price of the fish tend to soar because of the increase in oil prices,
Negombo, located on the west coast of Sri Lanka, is a peaceful coastal town with adorable white sandy beaches and turquoise water stretches. Negombo is one of the biggest open-air fishing village and markets in the country. This traditional fishing village, also known as the Lellama among the locals, is perched across the lagoon bridge, near the Old Dutch Gate.
