RIYADH — The moon-sighting committee in Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday, May 11, that the crescent of the month of Shawwal could not be sighted from the Tamir observatory, meaning the month of Ramadan this year will be 30 days and the first day of Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Thursday (May 13).
In Sri Lanka, the crescent is likely to be sighted on Wednesday evening. The president of the Grand Mosque, Thaufiq Zubyr told Colombo Times that he has summoned the committee on Wednesday night to determine the day of the festival in the island. A decision will be taken depending on the sighting of the moon in the island, he added.
The meeting will be attended by Hilal (Crescent) Ulamas from the Colombo Grand Mosque, All-Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, Memon Hanaffi Mosque and officials from the Islamic Affairs Department.
