COLOMBO : On an initiative made by Justice Minister Ali Sabry, 28 families who were affected by a massive fire on Monday, March 15 in Colombo, received Rs 50,000 each from his gesture.
The fire broke out at the Kajimawatte, Furguson Road in Grandpass and damaged nearly 28 shanties.Police said the fire had erupted at around 2.40 a.m.on Monday and that close to 28 temporary homes built in the area have been either destroyed or partially damaged in the fire .
The fire was brought under control by fire fighters and police said no casualties were reported from the fire.
Speaking to the Colombo Times,Minister Sabry said following the cash donations : “ We were deeply saddened by this sudden outbreak of fire which brought down the homes of several poor families living in this area.”
The minister said that he was informed of the tragic incident by Secretary of National Bhikku Front and Chief Incumbent of .Kelaniya Nadhee Temple Akuressa Sagara Thero who had invited him to the site.
The minister said that the funds for this generous donations were generated from well-wishers and hoped that it would help them get back on their feet. He also said that he is contacting the concerned authorities to find them a permanent solution to the problems of the affected families.
Colombo Mayor, Rosy Senanayake who visited the site on the same day, made arrangements to supply all three meals to the people affected by the fire.
