COLOMBO : The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka,(MCL) welcomes the announcement of the Government of Sri Lanka permitting burial of those who die of COVID 19, which is in line with the WHO guidelines and experts in the fields of Virology and Epidemiology.
In a press release issued today by the MCL President, it is said : “ The cremation only policy prevented many grieving families from carrying out the final rites of their loved ones according to their religious and cultural beliefs, leaving them violated and traumatized. The reversal of this policy has brought relief to thousands of elderly and ailing citizens who were refusing to seek medical attention fearing cremation, should they die in hospital.
While appreciating the Government allowing the burial of people who die of Covid19, the MCSL also urges the Government to designate at least one burial site in every district to bury those who die of COVID 19. The Muslim community will adhere to the standard operating procedures issued by the Director General of Health Services.
We are also thankful to the Government for not mandating burials at Iranathivu island in the Gulf of Mannar which could have strained the cordial relationship between the Muslims, Hindus and Christians who have lived in peace in this district for centuries.”
