COLOMBO : General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Member of Parliament Nizam Kariyappar has announced deep concerns over the death of the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), stating that the incident raises serious questions about the safety and protection of key witnesses involved in sensitive criminal investigations.
In a statement shared on X, Kariyappar said that regardless of whether the death is ultimately determined to be a murder or a suicide, it highlights the urgent need to safeguard individuals who possess critical information in high-profile cases.
Referring to the former IGP’s role in the Easter Sunday investigations, the MP emphasized that a thorough, independent, and impartial inquiry is imperative to establish the truth.
Kariyappar further pointed out that Sri Lanka urgently requires a robust witness protection mechanism to ensure that those with vital information are protected from intimidation, undue pressure, or physical harm.
Quoting James Hadley Chase’s novel The Dead Stay Dumb, he remarked, “Dead men tell no tales,” adding that this is precisely why individuals who hold the truth must be protected.
