0COLOMBO : At a time, a conflicts have become a norm in the entire world and as a result, death, desperation and destruction steal the show. Muslims around the world marks Eid Ul-Fitr at the end of Month of Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is one of the largest and most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar, bringing communities together in gratitude and festivity.
Islam is built upon five core pillars, which are fundamental practices that guide every Muslim’s life: the declaration of faith (Shahada), prayer (Salah), almsgiving (Zakat), fasting during Ramadan (Sawm), and the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj). Among these, the fourth pillar—fasting during Ramadan—holds special significance. After a month of fasting from dawn to sunset, accompanied by intensified worship, charity, and good deeds, Eid ul-Fitr, which translates to the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” provides an occasion to celebrate the completion of this spiritual journey.
Eid begins with congregational prayers, where Muslims gather in mosques or large outdoor spaces to express gratitude to God. The prayers are preceded by the giving of Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation meant to help those in need, ensuring that all members of the community can partake in the celebrations.
Following the prayer, the festivities unfold with family visits, gatherings and the sharing of traditional foods. It is customary for Muslims to dress in new clothes, enjoy a rich breakfast, and spend the day surrounded by friends and loved ones. The sharing of gifts and the exchange of the greeting Eid Mubarak—meaning “Blessed Eid” in Arabic—add to the joy of the occasion.
Eid ul-Fitr is not only a time of celebration but also a moment to reflect on the values of compassion, generosity and community. Across the globe, over 1.9 billion Muslims join in this global celebration, sharing their happiness and extending care to their friends, families and neighbours.
As we celebrate Eid, may it bring peace, prosperity and happiness to all, and may our good deeds from the holy month of Ramadan be accepted and rewarded.
Eid Mubarak!
