COLOMBO: An evening, on Saturday the 7th, I attended an Iftar (fast-breaking) gathering organised by a relative at Galle Face Green. It was heartening to see several families choosing this iconic public space as the venue to break their fast together. However, it was also noticeable that large areas of the ground were without grass, possibly due to the prevailing warm weather.
While we were seated on mats breaking our fast, with many children playing nearby, I observed vehicles — including two cars and even a lorry — driving across the Green from the direction of Colombo Port City towards the Galle Face Hotel, right through the area where families were gathered.
Allowing vehicles to enter the grounds poses a serious safety concern, particularly for children and other visitors who come to relax and enjoy the open space. In addition, vehicular movement further damages the already limited grassy areas of the Green.
I kindly request the Police and the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent vehicles from entering the grounds of Galle Face Green, thereby ensuring the safety of visitors and preserving this cherished public space for the benefit of all.
