


COLOMBO : Addressing the members of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce,President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that he looks to the country’s business community for its support to restore normalcy to public life .
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the cooperation of the country’s business community is essential both in providing relief to those affected by the adverse weather conditions and in the programme to restore normalcy to public life.
The President made these remarks when he met with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Saturday,Nov. (29) afternoon at the Defence Headquarters.
During the discussion, the President briefed the business community on the current situation in the country, as well as on the rescue and relief efforts being carried out by the government for those affected. He also drew attention to the support that could be extended by the business sector in these endeavours.
A wide-ranging discussion also took place on the challenges faced by the industrial sector amid this emergency situation and the urgent measures required to ensure that the sector continues to progress robustly without allowing the national economy to regress.
The business community also brought to the President‒s attention issues currently affecting sectors such as tourism, airports and transport. The meeting further addressed the urgent measures needed, once the disaster situation subsides, to restore electricity and drinking water supplies across the country, as well as to restore selected infrastructure including highways and bridges.
Attending the meeting were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath; Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake; Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Dr Harshana Suriyapperuma; Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyakontha (Rtd); the Tri-Forces Commanders; the Inspector General of Police; senior officials of the defence services; and Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Krishan Balendra, along with its members.
