COLOMBO: The state doctors’ union, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says that according to the reports of the Epidemiology Unit there is a risk of a severe coronavirus epidemic in eight districts of the country.
The risk of Covid-19 is higher in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Galle, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts where more than 100 cases of Covid are reported daily and in the Ratnapura district where more than 80 cases are found daily, Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association, Dr. Senal Fernando said.
Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo Monday, Dr. Senal Fernando said a large increase in the number of infected people in the Gampaha district is expected in the future.
He said the country was now at the peak of the epidemic and that a further increase in the number of patients is expected in the coming weeks, adding that it would take several more weeks for the benefits of the travel restrictions imposed to be seen.
He said that the health staff was working at full capacity and efficiency and if it was exceeded, a serious crisis could arise in the future.
Dr. Fernando said the epidemic could not be controlled without the support of the people and that the people of the districts where the epidemic is spreading as well as the entire country should be vigilant in this regard. He said the people’s compliance with the health instructions is essential to control the spread of the disease.
The GMOA Secretary said that the number of patients is increasing overwhelming the health staff and the epidemic is spreading among the family members of the health workers.
Dr. Fernando also requested the Ministry of Health to give priority to the family members of the health staff during the vaccination program to enable the health workers to work with mental concentration.(LankaPage)
