Dear fellow Malaysians and friends in Sri Lanka,
Today marks the 68th National Day of Malaysia, a significant milestone in our nation’s history. It is a time for reflection on our national identity, past achievements, and aspirations for the future. This year’s celebration carries the theme “Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni” (Malaysia MADANI: People Prioritised), which underscores the Government of Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring that the welfare of its people remains at the heart of national policy and celebration.
The Malaysia MADANI concept, introduced by The Honourable Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, lays out the vision of a civilised, skilled and inclusive society based on six core values namely, Sustainability, Prosperity, Innovation, Respect, Trust and Compassion. The concept embodies our aspiration to build a nation that is not only economically robust but also socially cohesive, ethically grounded, and environmentally responsible. This vision not only serves as a domestic compass but also shapes Malaysia’s engagement with the international community, including with our esteemed partner, Sri Lanka.
[31/08, 05:05] Rasooldeen: Malaysia–Sri Lanka Relations: A Strong and Enduring Partnership
Malaysia and Sri Lanka enjoy a warm and long-standing relationship, underpinned by historical ties, people-to-people connections, and growing economic cooperation. Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1957, Malaysia has treasured its close and mutually beneficial relationship with Sri Lanka. This year also marks the 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations – a testament to the enduring and close relations between our two nations.
Both countries share common perspectives on many global issues and challenges, providing a strong foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation and unlocking new avenues for growth. While trade and investment remain central to our partnership, there is significant potential for collaboration in areas such as education, tourism, agriculture and food security. Looking ahead, I envision a deeper and more strategic partnership between our two countries. Our cooperation is poised to evolve beyond traditional sectors, embracing emerging areas including climate resilience, digital transformation, Halal industry, and youth empowerment.
I am also pleased to note the growing number of visitors travelling between our two countries, reflecting a deepening interest and strong potential for enhanced collaboration in tourism and cultural exchange. To further strengthen people-to-people connectivity, several initiatives are being pursued — including the promotion of tourism campaigns such as Visit Malaysia 2026, the expansion of direct flight connectivity, and the encouragement of joint cultural and academic programmes. Strengthening these bonds is vital to fostering mutual understanding, deepening bilateral ties, and building enduring goodwill between Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
Furthermore, our partnership with Sri Lanka also extends to regional cooperation. As a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Malaysia can serve as a strategic gateway for Sri Lanka to deepen its economic and diplomatic engagement with the region. Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025 presents a timely opportunity to further elevate bilateral ties and promote more inclusive regional cooperation, recognising Sri Lanka’s potential role within the ASEAN framework.
Aspirations for the Future
As we look to the future, Malaysia aspires to become a nation that is not only economically advanced, but also socially cohesive, environmentally responsible, and globally respected. We remain committed to working with partners like Sri Lanka in addressing global challenges and promoting global peace.
To all fellow Malaysians in Sri Lanka, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a joyous and meaningful National Day. Your unwavering commitment in representing Malaysia with pride, integrity, and resilience abroad is deeply appreciated. May we continue to uphold the values of Malaysia MADANI and serve as ambassadors of peace, unity, and excellence in all that we do. I encourage each of you to remain united, support one another, and carry the Malaysian spirit proudly wherever you may be.
On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I also wish to express my sincere appreciation to the Government of Sri Lanka, under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, as well as to all friends of Malaysia in Sri Lanka for their
