NEGOMBO : Six persons have been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) including a person for smuggling turmeric and cardamom by the Navy in Negombo.
Troops raided a vehicle in the Kamachodai area in Negombo and seized the beedi leaves.
Troops seized 1568 kilograms of beedi leaves. Six suspects were arrested.
The investigation has revealed that these were brought from Tutucorin in southern India.
The main suspect is from Dehiwala area. The other five are from Negombo, Periyamulla and Porathota areas.
During the search, the Navy seized 865 kilograms, 45 grams of turmeric and 80 kilograms of 5 grams of cardamom while transporting turmeric and cardamom in the vehicle.
The seized leaflets, turmeric, auctions and the suspects have been handed over to the Negombo Police for legal action.
On the advice of Negombo Police Station Chief Udayakumara Woodler, Crime Investigation Division Officer Jayanath is taking steps to produce all seven suspects in court on Monday.
