COLOMBO: Zahira College, Colombo, celebrated its Founders’ Day at the College Abdul Ghafoor Hall under the patronage of Principal Trizviiy Marikkar recently.
Former Director General of the Ministry of Rehabilitation and former Vice Principal of Zahira College, A.M. Nahiya, delivered the Founders’ Day oration titled “Founders and Legacy of Zahira: Reflecting on 134 Years of International Transformation through the Lens of a Public Servant.”
In his address, Nahiya paid tributes to the founders of Zahira College and recalled their invaluable contributions and dedicated service to the institution.
Zahira College is the largest Muslim educational institution in Sri Lanka, with more than 5,400 students with nearly 300 teachers. The college was founded in 1892 as Al Madrasathul Zahira by two prominent Sri Lankan Muslims of the time, I.L.M. Abdul Aziz, and Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar, with the active patronage of Ahmed Orabi Pasha of Egypt.
Having been in existence for more than 134 years, Zahira College is a well-established and renowned educational institution in Sri Lanka. The college occupies an 11-acre campus in Maradana, in the heart of Colombo.
Board of Governors Secretary Nuzri Munsoor also addressed the gathering on behalf of Board of Governor’s Chairman Fouzul Hameed.
Students and teachers who participated in the Founders’ Day competitions received certificates from the chief guest, A.M. Nahiya. Also Principal Trizviiy Marikkar presented a token of appreciation to A.M. Nahiya in recognition of their presence.
Head of Co-Curricular Activities Ms. Shinaz Badurdeen, Old Boys’ Association President Hazik Jaleel, Vice Principals, Sectional Heads, members of the Board of Governors, teachers, students, old boys and parents attended the ceremony.
