Wakf Board appoints special trustees to the Kollupitiya Jumma mosque just two days ahead of the elections

COLOMBO : With just two days ahead of the general meeting to elect officials to the Kollupitiya Jumma Mosque, the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs has appointed a board of special trustees to the mosque on Friday,Jan.12

According to a letter signed by the Acting Director of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Ala Ahamed, the following have been appointed as special trustees on the recommendation of the Wakf Board.

The incumbent chief trustee of the mosque Muslim Salahudeen announced after the Jumma prayers on Friday that the Wakf department has appointed a group of trustees with immediate effect although the elections have been fixed and notified for Jan,14.

Salahudee introduced former Colombo Mayor Hussein Mohammed as one of the new appointed special trustees and allowed him to address the congregation.

Speaking to Colombo Times, Salahudeen said that although it was disappointing to note the appointment of trustees despite the notice given to all members of holding a general election to appoint the trustees. “ We have to follow the directives from the Wakf board and we will abide by it,” Salahudeen added.

Hussein Mohamed told Colombo Times that the new trustees have requested him to be the chairman of the board and he would continue the good work carried out by the previous board of trustees headed by Salahudeen. Mohamed said that he would go to the mosque on Saturday, Jan.13 to officially take over duties as chairman of the new board of trustees

A dissenting group which was seen in the mosque following the announcement of the new board of trustees said that they will not allow the new people to run the show and they would request the Wakf Board to allow the members of the congregation to elect their own trustees to the mosque.
