COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (September 15, 2025) – The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health, joined the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), United States Air Force (USAF), hospital staff, and community representatives to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the refurbished Akaragama Divisional Hospital on Friday, September 12.
The LKR 40.5 million (approximately USD $135,000) refurbishment of Akaragama Hospital was planned and overseen by Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and United States Air Force (USAF) engineers working side by side. Their cooperation reflects the trust at the core of U.S.–Sri Lanka military engagement and strengthens bonds across the Indo-Pacific. The upgrades included structural improvements, roofing, electrical and plumbing systems, HVAC equipment, power generation, interior fixtures, and security enhancements. The project was made possible through joint contributions from both nations, demonstrating a shared commitment to supporting the local community. Serving more than 45,000 patients each year—many from lower socio-economic backgrounds—Akaragama Hospital is a vital resource, now better equipped to deliver care through nine specialized clinics.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung who inspected the renovation efforts said: “The refurbishment of Akaragama Hospital shows how the United States and Sri Lanka can work side by side to deliver meaningful results for communities. By sharing resources and expertise, we have improved vital infrastructure while strengthening trust between our nations. What we build together today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s shared security. When our partners are secure, America is more secure.”
