COLOMBO : University College Birmingham expands facilities and career opportunities for Sri Lankan students
University College Birmingham (UCB) is investing £15 million in new facilities and commercial operations as universities across the UK face financial pressures, staff reductions and programme cuts, creating new opportunities for international students, including those from Sri Lanka.
A specialist institution focused on hospitality, culinary arts, business and professional education, UCB has invested more than £300 million in facilities over the past five years. Its latest expansion includes the acquisition of the iconic Cube Hotel in Birmingham city centre and the transformation of the former Marco Pierre White restaurant and 52-bedroom hotel into a state-of-the-art training facility.
The development is expected to create more than 150 hospitality jobs while providing students with practical experience in live commercial environments alongside their academic studies.
The university is also expanding its commercial operations with plans for a new restaurant in Harborne, a café, restaurant and bar at its Summer Row campus, and the refurbishment of the existing restaurant at Birmingham College of Food.
For Sri Lankan students, the expansion offers an opportunity to gain both internationally recognised qualifications and practical industry experience across hotel operations, fine dining, restaurant management, conferences and events, and food and beverage services.

UCB is currently recruiting experienced hospitality professionals, including former students, for management positions across its new venues. Major refurbishment work is being fast-tracked, with further details on opening dates and recruitment opportunities expected later this year.
Students may also be able to undertake permitted work while studying, subject to the conditions of their UK visa. This can provide opportunities to gain additional industry experience and develop professional skills while helping students manage some living costs.
