Treasury Cyber Heist: $2.5 Million Diversion Demands Immediate Presidential Commission – Faiszer Musthapha, PC, MP

COLOMBO :
“If the diversion of $2.5 million from the General Treasury to a wrong party is indeed a cyber heist, the entire economic fabric of Sri Lanka is at risk. Therefore, a Presidential Special Investigation Committee must be appointed immediately!”—Faiszer Musthapha, PC, MP said here on Monday , April 27

In statement to the press, MP Faiszer Musthapha emphasized that aomidst the severest financial crisis in Sri Lanka’s recent history, the government must act immediately regarding the alleged $2.5 million cyberattack. He stresses that this incident has placed both national security and economic stability under grave threat.

Musthapha pointed out that this event should not be viewed merely as a theft of money, but as a direct threat to national security.
In a global context where even the most highly secured systems, such as the U.S. White House, have fallen victim to hackers, the MP argues that it is time to analyze the vulnerabilities in Sri Lanka’s cyber security infrastructure from an intellectual perspective.

He asserted that’s those involved in this fraud must be brought to justice regardliess of their political affiliations or status, setting aside political biases in favor of technical expertise and accountability. To achieve this, he believes it is essential to seek the assistance of experts with international connections and high-level technical knowledge.

Given that these security concerns have arisen within the Treasury—the country’s highest financial institutionMusthapha suggested that the government should also seek the opposition’s support in efforts to recover the lost funds.
As vital hubs like the Sri Lankan banking system and the Inland Revenue Department undergo digitalization, the MP insisted an urgent review of whether current technical security protocols have become obsolete.

To ensure the security of technology-driven financial transactions, he urged the government to immediately appoint a “Presidential Special Investigation Committee,” involving subject-matter experts such as Dr. Hans Wijesuriya.

The MP warned that if a proper study is not conducted regarding the economic impact and technical vulnerabilities, and if robust firewalls or modern protective measures are not implemented, the consequences for the national economy will be severe.

Musthapha concludes by stating that this revelation should not be treated as mere news, but as a critical warning to safeguard the financial sovereignty of the nation.
