COLOMBO – S. Thomas’ College went through some anxious moments before overcoming Kingswood College 28-17 in their Inter-Schools Under-19 Division One League Rugby Tournament match played at Mount Lavinia.

The Thomians came under tremendous pressure twice in this game, but they managed to hold their nerve and record a convincing bonus-point win in the end while collecting their points from four goals.

Kingswood took advantage after S. Thomas’ were handed a yellow card and went on to plant their first try after they had opened the scoring with a penalty to make it 10-14 at half time.

The Thomians were handed two more yellow cards during the latter stages as they were reduced to 13-men but held on determinedly until the final whistle before registering a tense victory.

Scrum half Mahith Perera had an outstanding game for the home side with two splendid tries while fly half Yehan Bulathsinghalage was in excellent form while converting all four tries.

Zahira College kept to their promise once again as they outplayed Science College 24-8 in their Inter-Schools Under-19 Division One League Rugby Tournament match played at Maradana.

The newcomers to ‘A’ Division rugby, playing their first home game, made their intentions clear from the kick-off and were very much the dominant side as they ran down three magnificent tries inside the first 35 minutes of play.

The Zahirians scored their fourth and the bonus-point winning try shortly after the break and simply sailed through for their second successive win despite some resistance from Science College during the latter stages.

Royal College cruised to another big win as they trounced Vidyartha College 47-3 in their Inter-Schools Under-19 Division One League Rugby Tournament encounter played at the Royal Sports Complex in Colombo.

The former league champions, playing their first home game for the current season after two away fixtures, ran down four tries during a dominant first half and added three more in the second half for their biggest win in this year’s tournament.

Royal displayed their all-round attacking and defensive skills despite having 14-men on the field at one stage with Chanara Perera scoring back-to-back tries while Thineth Gamage, Tharusha Samarakoon, Charuka Senevirathne, Disas Pathirana and Ajmal Marikar scored one try each.
