COLOMBO: The Young Women’s Muslim Association (YWMA) of Sri Lanka marked its 40th anniversary with the launch of its commemorative documentary book, Our Growing Years, at a ceremony held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the Grand Zenith Banquet Hall, New Pradeepa Mawatha, Colombo 10.
The event, held under the patronage of YWMA President Mrs. Fawaza Thaha, brought together members, well-wishers, diplomats, community leaders, and distinguished guests to celebrate four decades of service dedicated to the empowerment of Muslim women and children.
Established in 1986, the YWMA has played a significant role in promoting humanitarian service, education, skills development, women’s empowerment, and community welfare. The commemorative publication, Our Growing Years, traces the Association’s four-decade journey, highlighting its milestones, achievements, and the dedication of the women who have contributed to its growth and success.
The High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka, Badli Hisham Adam, and his spouse attended as chief guests. Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Pakistan and Iran, Mohammed Shaheed, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of community service, women’s leadership, and the contribution of voluntary organizations to national development.
Among those present were A.H.M. Maheer, Chairman of Zeenath Trading; Mohamed Rasooldeen, Chief Editor of Colombo Times and senior journalist; Rasheed M. Imthiyas, Attorney-at-Law; and several distinguished personalities from the diplomatic, business, legal, media, and community sectors.
The programme included a special tribute to long-serving YWMA members in recognition of their dedicated service, a ceremonial cake-cutting to commemorate the anniversary, and a musical performance by Mueena Baig, daughter of the late Kalasuri Mohideen Baig.
Reaffirming its commitment to the future, the YWMA pledged to continue empowering Muslim women and children through education, leadership development, social welfare, and community engagement while preserving its legacy of service and compassion.
