The Young Women’s Muslim Association honours 75 students who have successfully passed out from its vocational training,spoken English courses

COLOMBO — The Young Women’s Muslim Association organised the Certificate Distribution Ceremony of Vocational Studies at the IMEX Reception Hall, Wellampitiya on Sunday January 11. It was held under the patronage of President of the YWMA Mrs. Fawaza Thaha.

The event was sponsored by the Canadian Sri Lankan Muslim Women’s Alliance

Zainab Jameel, student of the vocational center delivered the welcome address.

Seventy Five students who successfully completed the sewing course and Spoken English received certificates from chief guest Indonesian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dewi Gustina Tobing.

The Ambassador said in her speech Vocational training plays a vital role in empowering individuals and strengthening communities. By equipping participants with practical and market-relevant skills, programs such as this help create pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. More importantly, vocational education fosters dignity, independence, and resilience—qualities that are essential for sustainable development

She also appreciated the YWMA for its continuous dedication to community service and human development. “Your commitment to uplifting communities, particularly through education and skills training, is truly commendable.”

Colombo Times Chief Editor and Arab News Colombo Correspondent Mohamed Rasooldeen also addressed the gathering and said YWMA’s yeoman services under the leadership of Mrs. Fawaza Thaha many years. ” She conducts many projects, especially for poor Muslims students in education.” Rasooldeen praised YWMA and Fawaza Thaha’s services.

Teacher in charge of Spoken English Zahara Thaha launched her book ” Laana’s Light ” and presented the first copy of the book to the chief guest Indonesian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dewi Gustina Tobing.

YWMA Vice Patron Mrs. Mazahira Jabir draped the golden shawl and President Mrs. Fawaza Thaha presented a token of appreciation to the chief guest at this ceremony.

All Ceylon YMMA Conference Patron Khalid M. Farook, YWMA Vice Patron Mrs. Mazahira Jabir, Psst President Mrs. Jennath Ismail, Special guest Shareena Hassan, YWMA Treasurer Kaneez Malik, Indonesian Embassy Counselor Advisor Yadi Suriahadi, parents and students were also graced the event.
