
COLOMBO — The Heritage Derby Night 2025, held recently at the Lumina Ballroom, Cinnamon Life – City of Dreams, unfolded as an elegant and memorable prelude to the historic football encounter between Hameed Al Husseinie College and Zahira College. The occasion brought together distinguished old boys, dignitaries, sponsors, and well-wishers to celebrate a rivalry spanning over seven decades — now proudly formalised under the title “Heritage Derby.”
The event was graced by an array of distinguished personalities Dr. Rizvie Salih, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, attended as chief guest, delivering an inspiring address on how sport can unite people across generations. Hanif Yusoof, Governor of the Western Province, joined as guest speaker, sharing insights on discipline, sportsmanship, and respect.
Also Khalid Hamoud Nasser Alkahtani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Sri Lanka, as guest of honor. His attendance underscored the strong diplomatic, cultural, and sporting bonds between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. Warmly welcomed by the organizers,
In one of the evening’s most symbolic moments, the official match ball of the Heritage Derby 2025 was ceremoniously presented to Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Khalid Hamoud Nasser Alkahtani as a token of appreciation and respect. This gesture honoured the close relationship between the two nations and recognized the Ambassador’s role in fostering goodwill and cultural exchangeSpecial acknowledgments were made to Zainul Abdeen, Chairman of Light for Life, for his invaluable support, and to Mr. Hifaz Farook, Managing Director of Marine Grill and Title Sponsor of the Heritage Derby, whose partnership was instrumental in the event’s success.
A special mention was reserved for Faizal Buhary, Senior Vice Chairman of the Heritage Derby Working Committee, and J.A.M. Munaf, Head of Sports of Hameed Al Husseinie College and Vice Chairman of the Working Committee, for their exemplary leadership and tireless efforts in organising both the Derby Night and the match.
