Taekwondo has been a great asset to the police service – the IGP

COLOMBO : On 15th September, the Awards Ceremony of the IGP Challenge Cup 1st Inter-Divisional Police Taekwondo Championship was held at the Korean Embassy in Colombo.

It was hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in collaboration with the Police and the Taekwondo Federation in Sri Lanka. The Korean Ambassador, H.E. Santhush Woonjin JEONG and the Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne together welcomed many high-ranking police officers to the Korean Embassy including Mr. Ranmal Kodituwakku, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sajeewa Medawatta, Deputy Inspector General, National Police Academy and In-service, Varuna Jayasundara Deputy Inspector General, Commandment of Special Task Force and Mr. Sagara Keerthipala, Deputy Inspector General, Staff of DIG to Inspector General of Police, who graced this momentous occasion to recognise the accomplishments of the Sri Lanka Police and present the awards to the winners.

Kanchana Jayaratne, Vice President of Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation and Vice Chairman of the National Olympic Committee and Mr. Ruwan Alahakoon, Secretary General of Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, Master Kisu Lee and Embassy Secretary Soyeon Lim also attended the event.
Ambassador Santhush Woonjin Jeong delivering the congratulatory remarks stated that, “It is wonderful to meet you in person and commend your brilliant accomplishments. I am thankful to Mr. C.D. Wickramaratne, Inspector General of Police and Police authorities for your diligent and dedicated service to protect all people in Sri Lanka including the Korean residents. It is heartening to witness the interest and passion to learn Taekwondo among elite police officers of Sri Lanka. I am sure that mastering Taekwondo will be a great asset to advance your professional career. The Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka will continue to make every effort to support for further development of Sri Lankan Taekwondo. I hope you achieve the highest awards and charter a bright future for Taekwondo in Sri Lanka.”
C.D. Wickramaratne, the Inspector General of Police expressed his gratitude to the Korean Ambassador for his invaluable service to strengthen Korea-Sri Lanka ties. In particular he appreciated the untiring efforts of the Korean Ambassador Santhush to expand the Taekwondo movement among the Sri Lanka Police Force. He further mentioned the importance of incorporating Taekwondo sport into the Police Force as it will encourage the Police officers of Sri Lanka to be ‘flexible and determined.’ He said, ‘Introduction of Taekwondo has been a great asset to the police service and it will undoubtedly build a stronger police service in Sri Lanka.’
