Colombo: The Inland Revenue Bill to amend the Inland Revenue Act No 24 of 2017 was placed in the order paper on 26th of March 2021 and was passed in Parliament at the first reading.
Section 121 (1) of The Constitution of Sri Lanka allows a citizen to file a petition against a Bill at the Supreme Court within one week of the Bill being placed on the Order Paper of the Parliament.
The Inland Revenue Bill is now being challenged by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and Raja Nihal Hettiarachchi a Chartered Accountant by profession, according to court sources.
Hettiarachchi is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka and also a Fellow Member of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka.
The petitions are in relation to Clause 47 of the Bill which seeks to introduce a new section 190A and Clause 40 of the Bill which seeks to amend section 126 (5) of the principal enactment (i.e Inland Revenue Act No.24 of 2017).
Both petitions are being heard on 5th April (Monday).
