Supreme Council of Sufi Thareeqas concerned over Salley’s arrest

COLOMBO :  The Supreme Council of Sufi Thareeqas, the largest and most accepted Civil Organization amongst the Traditional Muslims of Sri Lanka has expressed its concerns over the National Unity Alliance Leader and former Western Province Governor, Azath Salley who was arrested by police last week for breach of local laws.

In a letter addressed to the President and the Premier from the Council President Nakeeb Mowlana states:  “ It has been brought to our notice that  Mohamed Azath Sanoon Salley had been arrested by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department on 16th March 2021. According to the information that we have received, the reason for this arrest is based on certain Media Statements by him.”

The letter further states : “ While we have no intention of disturbing any pending investigations that is being conducted lawfully by the authorities, naturally, we are concerned of the well being of Azath Salley, who is a Traditional Muslim and is well known for his statements against radicalism, extremism and Wahhabism.”
